5 Things I Love About the Horse Capital's Hidden Gem
A journey through North Florida at the super charming Equestrian Hotel
Skipped a week to recover from jet lag and we’re back! Rounding out my Southern Summer content as it is officially now *autumn* with this list of things I love in a place I had never previously given much thought to.
This extraordinary hotel has, quite literally, put Ocala on the map. Unless you're a horse enthusiast, Ocala might not have crossed your mind as a travel destination. However, the Equestrian Hotel has changed the game and made this serene Southern town a must-visit for many reasons. Whether you're an avid rider or not, this massive resort compound has something to offer everyone.
Below, five favorites from my late summer stay at the magical horse hotel:
1. The Art: A Feast for the Senses
The Equestrian Hotel is a true oasis for art lovers. From exquisite dog portraits by friends of the owners to captivating stained glass pieces by local Ocala artists, this place is a visual delight. What's more, you'll find plant animals around the property, created by Alexis Anthony, the horticulturalist from Augusta National, adding a whimsical touch to the surroundings.
2. Top-Notch Veterinary Care
For those who care deeply about their four-legged friends, the Equestrian Hotel has you covered. They have an excellent University of Florida vet on-site, equipped to handle both small and large animals. With amenities like the vibration plate, aqua room and salt therapy for horses, your equine companions will be pampered like royalty. I've also heard that a human clinic will soon open here, providing medical care for visitors and locals alike.
3. Passport Wine Series and Culinary Delights
Wine enthusiasts, rejoice! The Equestrian Hotel hosts a quarterly passport wine series presented by Wheels Up and the Ocala Food & Wine Festival (November 3-5) presented by Lugano Diamonds. They also boast eight fantastic dining concepts in addition to field concessions, on-site catering options and an incredible Food Network pastry chef, Yohann Le Bescond, who crafts the most mouthwatering desserts and flaky pastries. This means you can savor exquisite wines and tantalizing dishes right at the hotel all year long.
4. Luxurious Rooms with Scenic Views
One of the greatest pleasures of staying at the Equestrian Hotel is the elevated accommodations. A marble bathroom. Buttery soft beds. Their rooms not only offer opulent comfort but also prime views of the Grand Arena. Imagine waking up, opening the curtains and having VIP access to equestrians jumping right outside your window.
5. Shops Galore
Last but not least, the Equestrian Hotel features a diverse array of shops, boasting over 30 retailers. Whether you're in the mood for some souvenirs or looking for really unique gifts, you're sure to find something that catches your eye here. There is a toy store where you can grab something for your favorite babes and even a jewelry shop, diamonds included.
This place is really more than just a destination for horse lovers. It's a haven for art enthusiasts, a sanctuary for pets, a culinary paradise, a place of relaxation (I didn’t even get into spa details, but it was so good), and a shopper's paradise. So, whether you're planning your next vacation or just looking for an excuse to escape for a few days, consider adding the Equestrian Hotel to your travel bucket list. It's a hidden gem that's worth exploring, especially if you’re traveling between Florida and Georgia, and even if you’re not.
