Everything I Ate Last Month in NYC
If you like Japanese and Mexican food, you'll like this list.
Happy (what day is it?) Wednesday! It’s been a whirlwind of a month for me so far. My car got broken into TWICE and that’s kind of set the tone for July, so if you’re thinking about becoming a paid subscriber, now would be a great time to do that.
TL;DR I’ve spent a lot of money the past couple weeks, but still found the best/cheapest deal on car window replacement in Atlanta. I hope you never need this contact, but if you do, I got you.
In work news, I’ve been writing a lot, a lot.
Here is a story for Garden and Gun about new direct flights from the South to somewhere else — i.e. Miami to Nevis, New Orleans to Puerto Rico, (and the one I’m most excited about) Atlanta to Copenhagen. Another G&G piece I wrote recently provides a look inside Atlanta’s newest hotel and social club, FORTH. It has a great gym and rooftop pool, will eventually have a piano bar restaurant on the lobby level, and is just very cool overall.
Staying extra busy writing about restaurants for Resy on the local level, too. I have a few fun guides coming out soon, but until then you can catch up on this story about a well-known Atlanta chef’s journey into Scottish-American food and the inspiration behind another ATL chef’s ever-changing menu in which “Mexican ingredients form the foundation…”
But New York. Let’s talk about that. Here is a quick 48-hour guide I wrote a while back that’s great for if you have just a day or two in the city. And my most recent trip consisted of four nights primarily in Williamsburg, which just flew by way too fast.
In June, this is where I went, and what I had:
Onigiri at Kijitora — the Graham Ave. location has food and cute merch and according to a friend, the best strawberry matcha.
Then I discovered Ten Ichi Mart, a Japanese grocery just steps from another friend’s place. I over ordered and had snacks for days. What was in my cart? Sushi and miso soup and Hello Pandas, more onigiri, instant ramen (had to), and a coconut sparkling soda.
Kept it light at Sunday brunch at Oxomoco with a Mexican Caesar salad and a mango margarita. Newsflash: every Caesar is Mexican, because that’s where it was invented. The crowd favorite just celebrated its 100th birthday.
Guac and fruits with chamoy and a Mole Negroni at the Mexican-American Superbueno. The cocktail bar was recently named No. 2 Best Bar in North America.

More food: A couple tacos at Taqueria Ramirez; Ceviche and tacos and a quesadilla and a watermelon agua fresca at Los Mariscos inside Chelsea Market.
And more drinks: I strayed from Mexican and Japanese for a moment to enjoy a txakoli (it’s white wine from Basque Country) and a vermouth and soda at El Pinguino, a Spanish seafood bar, in Greenpoint; a frozen margarita at Turkey’s Nest (cash only) like the old days (last time I drank there it was definitely 10+ years ago); coffee from Blue Bottle and Butler and Bakeri; orange wine and olives at Terre BK in Park Slope; orange wine at Panzon; more orange wine and some fried rice at Rule of Thirds; the Diane Young cocktail from the Spring ‘24 menu at Amor y Amargo. It was listed as having notes of “Palo Santo, za’atar, and virility”; and some kind of spritz at Good Guy’s (from the same people behind Attaboy).
Looking for a place to rest your head?
If you need a hotel, the Hoxton is pretty much always my go-to. I like the rooms, the restaurant, bar, location, amenities, cost, etc. But the William Vale offers lovely balcony views and Le Labo products in the rooms, at a steeper price. You can also rent poolside cabanas here for the price of a one-bedroom apartment, and you might even spot celebs hanging around. They’re just like us.
Anyway, I will do my best to send out letters more than once a month in August! For now, subscribe, share, all that good stuff, cause your girl is tired, but still loves when you read and enjoy these (and screenshot/bookmark them for future travels).
