If you've never been to this historic Atlanta hotel, you're missing out.
In the heart of downtown Atlanta, the Candler Hotel oozes glamour, from its solid marble columns to its gold elevators and original mosaic tile floors.
I’ve stayed in a lot of beautiful hotels, but it’s not often they take my breath away. The 265-room, 17-story Candler Hotel in downtown Atlanta knocked me off my feet from the minute I walked in the door.
The Curio Collection hotel’s architecture is just stunning and it makes sense that it’s likely one of the oldest in the city with its grand stone sculptures (there are busts of Shakespeare AND Michelangelo on site), gilded elevators and sweeping ceilings. Built in 1906 by Coca-Cola founder and former Atlanta Mayor Asa Griggs Candler, this Beaux-Arts building was Atlanta’s first skyscraper. Rumor has it that the basement bank vault is where Candler hid the original Coca-Cola formula, too.
The rooms here are really understated and chic with big bathrooms (and gorgeous pink marbled vanities), Southern magnolia-patterned curtains and views of SkyView Atlanta — if you’re unfamiliar that’s a 20-story Ferris wheel in Centennial Park and I’ve always wanted to ride it. I think the bathrobe in the room should be for sale because it was the plushest, most luxurious hotel robe I’ve ever tried on (better than the Four Seasons).
Whether you’re a tourist or a local, you must visit the restaurant. Eating at By George has been one of my favorite dining experiences in the city, hands down. Chef Hugh Acheson — who competed in both Top Chef and Iron Chef — presents a French-inspired menu with locally sourced ingredients. For dinner, order the tomatoes and burrata with baby heirloom tomatoes and the tuna tartare to start. The wild mushroom pappardelle is perfect for sharing and bursting with flavor, although I don’t think you could go wrong no matter which entree you choose. My favorite dessert hands down was the profiteroles, but the creme brûlée came in at a close second — both have a house made whipped cream that’s to die for. If you pop in on a Friday or Saturday, you’ll get to enjoy the weekly Jazz guitarist, which adds some class to a date night, a girls’ night, and everything in between.
One thing to note: the hotel is valet only and I’d highly recommend doing that (vs. parking somewhere down the street) because it’s unlikely you’ll find street parking and if you plan to go out at night, you wouldn’t necessarily want to be walking back late alone. That said, there's plenty to do nearby, including tours of CNN Center and World of Coca-Cola or a walk through Woodruff Park. The hotel is also located near Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Phipps Arena so if you’re in town for a sporting event, reserving a room at the Candler is a no-brainer.
This sounds so enticing!
