Where to Stay in San Miguel de Allende
This is the Disneyland of Mexico, in that it's so beautiful it doesn't seem real.
My best friend got married in San Miguel de Allende last year, and I swear I’ve had this in the drafts since November. Could SMA possibly be the actual happiest place on earth?
It was my first time in this magical Mexican city and the wedding was a fairytale four-day extravaganza that consisted of a welcome party, a Dia de Los Muertos altar at the wedding (where we got to honor our loved ones who are no longer here with us through photos and ofrendas) and a post-wedding day party at a ranch with mariachis, horses, a Colombian band, a baby cow, micheladas, paella, churros, lots of drinking, dancing, and fireworks.
When I wasn’t busy with wedding festivities, I had a little time to wander around town, snapping pics, ducking into cathedrals and finding bakeries and restaurants to stop into for a quick snack. I stayed at the gorgeous and historic wedding venue villa, which was pretty surreal (bestie perks), but I fell madly in love with the city and am hoping to return soon, so I’ve started to compile a list of my favorite hotels for next time. If you are headed to SMA anytime soon, let me know! I can help you book your hotel and suggest transportation that’s comfy (take the bus from Mexico City, it’s under four hours away) and doesn't break the bank so you can spend your money on food, drinks, lodging, tchotchkes — the things that really matter.
Where to Stay (Over $300/night)
Rosewood San Miguel de Allende
Quiet luxury is found at the five-star Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, featuring stunning colonial architecture, spacious suites, and on-site tennis courts. Depending on when you visit, a room here could cost upward of $700/night, but I think it’s worth it if you’re looking to splurge. Enjoy drinks and bites at Luna Rooftop (in addition to three other dining/drinking concepts), a bi-level pool, and personalized service in the heart of the historic city.
Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond Hotel
Another five-star property (and relatively cheaper at an average of $500/night), Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond Hotel, is a collection of beautifully restored 17th century mansions. Experience old-world charm here, delight in award-winning cuisine at one of multiple restaurants, enjoy live music on the weekends, get drinks at Tunki Rooftop by Handshake (yes, that Handshake), unwind in the lush gardens, and get your self-care in with a Mexican Ritual or Agave Moons treatment at Laja Spa.
Live Aqua Urban Resort
Immerse yourself in contemporary luxury at Live Aqua Urban Resort, a quick taxi ride of 20-minute walk to the center of town. This sophisticated hotel (between $300 and $500/night) offers chic rooms, a fab spa, and gourmet dining options (three restaurants and a cigar bar). Relax at the gorgeous pool with breathtaking views of San Miguel de Allende.
Where to Stay (Under $300/night)
Finca la Devocion
Discover the charm of Finca la Devocion, where my friend hosted the most incredible post-wedding ranch party and BBQ. This beautiful retreat is located outside of town, but offers an unforgettable stay for under $300/night. It’s a taxi ride away, making it a perfect escape if you have transportation arranged, but also want a little peace and quiet on a farm.
Orchid House San Miguel
Experience comfort and style at Orchid House San Miguel. This charming boutique hotel features vibrant decor, modern amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere — it’s perfect for groups of 6 to 10 people or someone hosting a small gathering. If booking just one room, prices range from $120 to $250/night. Enjoy the convenient location, just steps from Parroquia de San Miguel, and exceptional hospitality.
Our Habitas San Miguel de Allende
Embrace a unique, eco-friendly stay at Our Habitas San Miguel de Allende. This sustainable hotel, ten minutes from the city center, offers stylish accommodations, a serene environment, and a focus on wellness. Soak in the hotel’s natural hot springs and take in the peaceful surroundings for around $200/night.

And a Bonus Stay
Under an hour from SMA is a town called Querétaro, where coincidentally one of my other besties is from. When she got married here 5-6 years ago, I stayed at the (whispers in embarrassment) *Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn, I actually couldn’t find it when I looked it up* — which was economical and, surprise surprise, had a great rooftop pool. But if I return anytime soon I would likely stay at the Grand Fiesta Americana Querétaro, a cute, colorful hotel that’s also not far from Bernal (another pueblo magico) or at the AC Hotel, which looks chic and new.
More Mexico
Soon, I’ll share my guide to Merida, a quick plane ride from Mexico City, where I spent my birthday in May. It was 105 degrees on some days (no me gusta), but somehow, even in extreme heat, I fell in love all over again. Can’t wait to tell you all about it. And if you’re headed to CDMX anytime soon, check out this hotel, bars, and restaurants guide I wrote last year:
Where to Eat, Drink, Stay & Play in Mexico City
Mexico City is super special to me. My first ever Mexico trip was Mexico City. Not Cancun. Not Cabo. Not Puerto Vallarta. Not Tulum. MEXICO CITY. Thanks to my grad school bestie who is from there and went back to live there after our years in Savannah. I’m so nostalgic for that first trip in 2014. We saw Cut Copy and Arcade Fire at a music festival called
